The South Mountain Community College women's basketball team (5-14, 0-9 ACCAC) lost 85-44 to Pima CC in an ACCAC home game at the SMCC Gym on Jan. 22. Sophomore forward Rahimeh Salaam finished with 17 points and 12 rebounds to record her fourth double-double of the season for the Cougars.
SMCC trailed 42-22 at halftime and fell 43-22 in the second half. The Cougars shot 23.7 percent (18 of 76) and totaled 44 rebounds, eight assists, 11 steals, and four blocks in defeat. SMCC grabbed 18 offensive rebounds and had 14 points off 15 Pima CC turnovers.
Salaam was 7 of 17 from the field, and five of her dozen rebounds came on the offensive glass. She added two assists, a steal, and two blocks in 33 minutes and is averaging 9.1 points, 7.9 rebounds, and 1.9 blocks per game in 14 contests.
Sophomores Auak Jok and Valery Velazquez each posted five points. Jok grabbed seven rebounds and added a steal and an assist, while Velazquez had a steal. Freshman DeeDee Medlock also scored five points and added five rebounds.
Sophomore Leslie Aguirre recorded four points, four assists, four steals, and two rebounds in 29 minutes, and freshman Destiny Dixon had four points, two steals, and one rebound.
