JCCC races to 30-point halftime lead on way to a 92-57 win over Labette

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The 10-ranked Johnson County men's basketball team jumped out early to an 18-2 lead, built it 30 by halftime and closed out with a 35-point victory over Labette on Saturday afternoon at JCCC Gymnasium, 92-57. The 35-point difference marked the second largest in the 73-game series with the Cardinals. 

With the victory the Cavaliers improve to 17-3 overall and remain alone in first place in the KJCCC Division II standings at 5-0. Labette fell to 6-15 overall and 0-5 in conference play. 

Five Cavaliers finished in double-digit figures with sophomore forward Brandon Mann posting a game-high 20 points, with 16 coming in the first half.  He was 6-6 shooting and made 4-of-5 free throws in the opening half and finished the game 8-for-8 from the field. 

Sophomore guard Steven Samuels tallied 18 points, hitting 8-of-13 shots with a pair of 3-pointers. He also had seven rebounds and three assists. Freshman point guard Gavin Harvey followed with 13 points, seven assists, three boards and two steals. 

Sophomore Traeger Rader came in off the bench to post double-digits in points for a second consecutive game. The 6-8 forward out of Eudora hit 5-of-8 shots including two beyond the arc to post 12 points. He also grabbed six rebounds. 

Sophomore guard Jordan Jenkins also provided a spark of the bench hitting all four of his shot attempts including a pair of 3-pointers to match his season with 10 points. 

Other key numbers were also turned by freshman forward Ron Taylor (7 points), freshman forward Taveon Vann (4 points, 6 rebounds, sophomore guard Ben Miller (3 points, five rebounds) and freshman guard Joey Robinson (7 rebounds, 5 assists, 2 steals).

The Cardinals had two players post double figures led by Demarco Davis with 14 followed by Nyot Arop with 12. 

The Cavaliers travel to Fort Scott on Wednesday, January 29 to take on the Greyhounds (11-7, 2-2) then return home to host Hesston on Saturday, February 1 at 4 p.m.
