Southwestern Spartans Men's Basketball Recap – Three-Game Summary

Game 1 – December 30, 2024
Southwestern CC 63, Minnesota West CTC 82

The Spartans fell to Minnesota West Community & Technical College, 82-63, after a tough road contest. A slow start saw Southwestern trailing 38-25 at the half, and despite improving their offensive output in the second half, the Spartans couldn't overcome the early deficit.

Jakub Jozef Istok led the way for Southwestern with 15 points and 8 rebounds, while Donnary Fontenot added 12 points. James Braddy contributed 11 points and 7 rebounds, providing a steady presence in the paint. Thomas Morgan came off the bench to notch 14 points and 9 boards. The Spartans shot 41.9% from the field but struggled beyond the arc, connecting on just 3 of 17 attempts.

Minnesota West was led by Zackery Rygg, who scored 20 points, and Henry Counsel, who added 15. The home team's 11 made three-pointers ultimately proved to be the difference.


Game 2 – December 31, 2024
Southwestern CC 81, Minnesota North-Hibbing 78

The Spartans bounced back in a nail-biter, defeating Minnesota North College-Hibbing, 81-78, to close out the calendar year. Southwestern jumped out to a commanding 53-34 halftime lead and held off a furious second-half rally by Hibbing.

Donnary Fontenot paced the Spartans with 23 points, shooting 8-for-18 from the field and 5-for-5 from the free-throw line. James Braddy added 19 points and 7 rebounds, while Theo Alexandersson Ohnell chipped in 15 points. Kael Jones was dominant on the glass, recording a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds.

Despite being outscored in the second half, clutch free-throw shooting (83.3%) helped Southwestern secure the win. Hibbing's Eriq Caraballo led all scorers with 26 points, but the Spartans' balanced attack prevailed.


Game 3 – January 4, 2025
Southwestern CC 67, Iowa Lakes CC 63

In their first game of the new year, the Spartans protected home court with a hard-fought 67-63 win over Iowa Lakes Community College. Southwestern led by nine at the half and withstood a late push from Iowa Lakes to secure the victory.

Donnary Fontenot led the charge with 20 points and 6 assists, while Rickey Loftin II added 16 points and 5 rebounds off the bench. James Braddy turned in an all-around performance with 11 points, 7 rebounds, and 6 assists.

Head Coach Darryl Fletcher praised the team's resilience, stating, "We talked about how we had to match Iowa Lakes physically, and I believe we did that for the most part. I'm proud of how we dealt with the highs and lows of the game and kept our composure."

The Spartans are now tied for sixth in the conference and will travel to face Northeast on Wednesday.
