SMCC Women's Basketball Falls to Scottsdale CC

The South Mountain Community College women's basketball team (5-16, 0-10 ACCAC) lost 66-48 to Scottsdale CC in an ACCAC home game at the SMCC Gym on Wednesday, Jan. 29. Freshman guard Sadie Gardner led SMCC with 14 points and freshman guard Destiny Dixon added 10 off the bench. Still, the Cougars could not complete the comeback against the Fighting Artichokes. 

Trailing 41-25, SMCC won the third quarter 13-9 to cut the deficit to 50-38 entering the fourth. However, SCC took the period 16-10 to secure the victory. The Cougars shot 35.7 percent (20 of 56) from the field and added 27 rebounds, 13 assists, two blocks, and 15 steals. SMCC forced 30 SCC turnovers and scored 22 points off those miscues. 

Gardner was 6 of 15 from the field in 29 minutes and made two 3-pointers. Her 14 points were one shy of her season best and the third time she has reached double figures. She added three rebounds, two steals, and an assist. Gardner is averaging 6.6 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 2.0 assists in 10 games this season. 

Dixon was 5 of 8 off the bench in 16 minutes and had an offensive rebound. This was Dixon's 10th time scoring in double figures this season. She is averaging 9.8 points and 4.2 rebounds in 20 games. 

Sophomore forward Rahimeh Salaam finished with nine points, five rebounds, two blocks, and one steal in 20 reserve minutes. She is averaging 9.1 points, 7.3 rebounds, and 1.8 blocks in 16 games this year. 

Sophomore guard Leslie Aguirre posted seven points, six assists, and a season-high six steals in 33 minutes. She is averaging 8.2 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 4.8 assists in 19 games this year. 

Freshman DeeDee Medlock had five assists, four points, four rebounds, and four steals in 30 minutes off the bench. The four steals matched a season-best for the third time. She is averaging 6.1 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 2.7 assists in 18 games this year.
