Delta College Men’s Basketball Triumphs in Gritty Home Opener
Delta College's men's basketball team opened their season in style, grinding out a 68-57 victory in front of an energized home crowd at Pioneer Gym. The Pioneers leaned on their rebounding prowess and a balanced offensive attack to secure the win, setting an early tone for what could be a promising season.
"Both Darren Mitchell and Willie Humphrey had outstanding performances as freshman to help get the win. Also, winning the debut home game meant a ton" says coach Brandon Bennnett.
Forward Willie Humphrey anchored the Pioneers' effort with a commanding performance in the paint, tallying 8 points and 13 rebounds. His dominance on the boards was instrumental in Delta's 39-34 rebounding advantage, giving the team crucial second-chance opportunities.
Delta's scoring was spread across the roster, with four players reaching double digits. Guard Jayden Hackett led the way with 12 points, adding four steals and four rebounds in a dynamic two-way performance. Fellow guard Evan Booker contributed 11 points, showcasing his versatility with two assists and key defensive stops.
The Pioneers' bench played a pivotal role, contributing 31 points. Jaylen Carthan and Darren Mitchell were standouts, combining for 23 points and 8 rebounds. Carthan's efficient scoring (4-of-7 from the field) and Mitchell's hustle on the glass provided a crucial spark.
Delta's ability to control the pace of the game was evident as they shot 43.5% from the field and converted critical free throws down the stretch to seal the win. Despite their struggles from beyond the arc (3-of-22), the Pioneers' determination and teamwork overcame any offensive lulls.
