DMACC softball team opens season with two wins in SCC Turf Tournament

The DMACC softball team began the 2024-25 spring season in the SCC Turf Tournament Feb. 16 at West Burlington and came away with a pair of shutout victories.

 

Sophomore Macy Blomgren of Waukee and freshman Brooklyn Baumgardner of Slater combined on a three-hitter in the Bears' 3-0 win over Rock Valley Community College (RVCC) in their tournament opener and freshman Jacki Baas of Bondurant tossed a two-hitter in a 1-0 win over Illinois Central College (ICC) in the second game.

 

DMACC, ranked ninth in the Division II preseason poll from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), broke a scoreless tie with three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning in winning the first game.

 

Freshman Ella Husak of Polk City started the rally with an infield single and moved to third on an infield grounder by freshman Bri Tigges of Urbandale. Freshman Mo Purdy of Des Moines followed with a double to right field, driving in Husak. Freshman Erin Ades of Boone then singled to left field and sophomore Delaney Milanowski of Spring Green, Wis., doubled to left, driving in Purdy and Ades.

Milanowski, Purdy and freshman Macee Reilling of Dallas Center led DMACC's six-hit attack with one double apiece.

 

Blomgren pitched the first five innings for the Bears, allowing two hits with seven strikeouts and a walk. Baumgardner pitched the final two innings and came away with the win. She allowed one hit, struck out one batter and walked one.

 

Husak had two of DMACC's five hits in the second game and drove in the lone run in the bottom of the sixth inning to give the Bears the win.

 

Sophomore Breanna Caffery of Bettendorf started the rally with a two-out single and moved into scoring position by stealing second base. Husak's then singled up the middle, scoring Caffery.

 

Freshman Jacki Baas of Bondurant threw all seven innings and came away with the win. She allowed two hits and struck out four batters.

 

The DMACC softball team will play in the NFCA Leadoff Classic Feb. 21 to 23 at Columbus, Ga. The Bears will face Jones College (JC) in their tournament opener on Feb. 21 and the Bobcats, a traditional NJCAA Division II softball power, are already 13-3 this season. DMACC will face ICC for a second time in the second game on Feb. 21. The Bears will play Chipola College (CC) and Southeastern Illinois College (SEIC) on Feb. 22 and will close tournament play against Seminole State College of Florida (SSCF) on Feb
