Freshman Rylan Smith of Lincoln, Neb., led five players in double figures with 22 points as the DMACC men's basketball team handed Western Iowa Tech and Community College (WITCC) a 105-58 loss December 11 inside the DMACC gymnasium.
Smith shot 80 percent from the field, hitting eight of 10 shots, including 6-of-8 from three-point range.
Sophomore Jamal Ambrose of Apple Valley, Minn., came away with 14 points, sophomores Da'Shon Fisher of Iowa City and Trevian Carson of Des Moines scored 13 points apiece and freshman Andrew Austin of Rock Rapids tallied 12 points as the Bears improved to 12-1 overall and 3-0 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) with their sixth consecutive victory.
DMACC, ranked third in this week's Division II poll from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), never trailed in the game. The Bears made 21 of 36 field goal attempts in building a 55-25 lead at halftime and coasted to the win in the second half with 59 percent shooting on 19 field goals in 32 attempts. They led by as many as 51 points.
For the game, DMACC was 40 of 68 from the field for 59 percent. The Bears made 15 of 33 three-point attempts for 46 percent and were 10-of-12 from the free throw line.
Sophomore Demerius Shakur of Milwaukee, Wis., grabbed eight rebounds and Carson finished with seven in leading DMACC to a 35-33 advantage on the boards. Carson and Smith led the Bears in assists with six apiece and Shakur added five. Smith topped DMACC in steals with four.
The DMACC men's basketball team will play Kirkwood Community College (KCC) Dec. 15 at Cedar Rapids. KCC is 11-1 overall and 2-1 in the ICCAC. The Eagles are ranked fifth in the NJCAA Division II poll.
