Prince George’s Women’s Basketball Survives Second Half Comeback Attempt By Harford

The Prince George's Community College women's basketball team took to the road on Wednesday, January 29th, traveling to Bel Air, Maryland for a matchup between two Owl programs against Harford Community College. The Owls of Prince George's used a pair of strong defensive quarters in the first half to build a lead and hold off a strong second half push from Harford's Fighting Owls to earn a 66-58 road victory. Wednesday's win improved Prince George's to 13-3 on the season while Harford dropped to 11-10.

The Owls started off hot as they built a 15-point lead by halftime, 36-21. Sophomore Tamia Washington, starting her fifth consecutive game after coming off the bench her first season and a half in an Owls uniform, led the team at the break with 16 points and 3 rebounds. Prince George's was especially stout on the defensive end in the first two quarters, forcing 20 turnovers while allowing Harford to score just 8 points in the opening frame.

Harford managed to flip the energy coming out of halftime and trim Prince George's lead down to seven by the end of the third quarter, 47-40. The Fighting Owls continued to apply pressure in the final quarter, inching closer to Prince George's before tying the game at 53 with 3:29 remaining before taking the lead on their next possession, 55-53 with under three minutes to go. Prince George's freshman Kryslynn Stewart responded with a made layup plus the and-one after a Harford foul to put Prince George's back up by one.

Harford then tied things back up once again with a one-for-two trip at the free throw line before Jai'Den Anderson knocked down a clutch jumper which put Prince George's in front for good, 58-56. The Owls closed out the final minute by hitting all eight of their attempts from the free throw line while holding Harford to just one made field goal to seal the win for Prince George's.

The Owls collectively shot 83% (19/23) from the free throw line on the day, including a perfect 13-for-13 in the fourth period alone.

Washington finished as the top scorer on the day with 22 points, 8 rebounds, and 2 steals. Wednesday's performance was the seventh game in a row that Washington has finished in double-digits as her role has recently expanded with injuries to some of her teammates. Stewart ended her day with 14 points, 7 assists, 6 rebounds, and 3 steals in another all-around performance.

Prince George's closes out the month on Friday when the team hits the road again for a divisional game at CCBC Catonsville for a 5 PM tipoff. Catonsville's Cardinals enter Friday's game with a 3-11 record but are fresh off a win of their own against Allegany College of Maryland on Wednesday night, 47-33.
