DMACC softball team goes 3-1 against Neosho County and Allen

The DMACC softball team improved to 16-3 for the season after winning three of four games against Neosho County Community College (NCCC) and Allen County Community College (ACCC) March 11 and 12 at Chanute, Kan., and Iola, Kan.

 

The Bears, ranked third in this week's Division II poll from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), began play with an 11-1 win over NCCC in the first game of a doubleheader March 11 at Chanute, Kan. NCCC won the second game, 10-2. The first game was decided in six innings and the second ended after five innings.

 

DMACC freshman Kierra Jungers of Fonda threw her third no-hitter of the season as the Bears handed ACCC an 8-0 loss March 12 at Iola, Kan., and they completed the sweep with a 13-1 decision in the second game. The first game ended after six innings and the second game ended after ACCC batted in the fifth.

 

DMACC scored four runs in the top of the third, four in the top of the fifth and three in the top of the sixth in their 11-1 win over NCCC on March 11. NCCC tallied its lone run in the bottom of the fourth.

 

Freshmen Macee Reilling of Dallas Center and sophomore Delaney Milanowski of Spring Green, Wis., led the Bears at the plate with two hits apiece, including one double apiece. Reilling led the Bears in runs batted in with three and Milanowski and freshmen Erin Ades of Boone and Bre Tigges of Urbandale drove in two runs apiece.

 

Jungers went the distance and came away with the win. She allowed one run on three hits, struck out 13 and walked two.

 

DMACC led NCCC 2-0 after batting in the top of the first in the second game, but the Panthers tied it with two runs in the bottom of the first and scored twice in each of the next four innings to come away with the win.

 

Sophomore Breanna Caffery of Bettendorf led the Bears with two hits, including a triple, and Ades collected DMACC's only RBI in the game.

 

Freshman Jacki Baas of Bondurant pitched the first inning and two-thirds and suffered the loss. She allowed four runs on six hits and struck out one batter. Sophomore Macy Blomgren of Waukee also went an inning and two-thirds, allowing four runs on four hits with two strikeouts. Freshman Brooklyn Baumgardner of Slater went the last inning and a third, allowing two runs on two hits with two walks.

 

Jungers faced 20 batters, two over the minimum, striking out 10 and walking one in improving to 6-0 for the season with the win in the opener on March 12.

 

Sophomore Mia Walker of Fonda led the Bears at the plate with three hits and freshman Ella Husak of Polk City, Reilling and Tigges had two hits apiece, including a double from Husak, two double from Tigges and a home run from Reilling. Husak, Reilling and sophomore Hilary Wilson of Solon drove in two runs apiece for the Bears, who scored three runs in the first, three in the fourth and one each in the fifth and sixth innings.

 

Ades homered and drove in three runs in DMACC's win in the second game. The Bears scored in every inning, getting five runs in the first, two in the second, three in the third, two in the fourth and one in the fifth. ACCC scored its lone run in the bottom of the fourth.

 

Husak led the Bears at the plate with three singles and Caffery and Reilling had two singles apiece. Freshman Jasey Anderson of Estherville joined Ades in extra base hits with a triple.

 

Baas threw the first four innings and improved to 6-1 with the win. She allowed one run on two hits, struck out two and walked one. Sophomore Ellie Flanagan of Coggon pitched one inning and retired all three batters she faced.

The DMACC softball team will play a doubleheader against Central (Neb.) Community College (CCC) March 17 at Columbus, Neb.
