Baseball outlasted by Apaches 7-6 in 14 innings in series finale

YUMA, Ariz. – The Arizona Western Matadors Baseball team (30-17, 15-14) scored three runs in the ninth inning to force extras before falling 7-6 in 14 innings to No. 10-ranked Cochise (40-10, 21-9) in the series finale on Saturday afternoon at Walt Kammann Baseball Field.

The Matadors trailed 6-3 entering the bottom of the ninth inning before loading the bases with nobody out. Parker Husu pulled the Matadors to within a run at 6-4 with an RBI single into center. After Victor Lopez popped out on the infield, Kylian Bamberger drew a bases-loaded walk and Javier Diaz reached on an error to tie the game at 6-6. Nathan Houston lined into a double play to send the game to extra innings.

Gregorys Mateo kept the Apaches off the scoreboard in extra innings until the top of the 14th inning when Cochise took a 7-6 lead on a sacrifice fly.

Cochise opened the scoring with a two-run homer in the second inning before the Matadors got on the board in the third on a Luca Hoerger RBI single.

The Apaches scored the next four runs to grow the lead to 6-1 before Arizona Western chipped away with two runs in the fifth inning.

The Matadors hit the road on Thursday, April 17, taking on California Miramar in a single nine-inning game beginning at 1:00 pm.
