KANKAKEE — A strong outing from Ethan Krei helped the Sandburg baseball team almost knock off 12th-ranked Kankakee in Game 1, but the Chargers came up short in both ends of a road doubleheader against the Cavaliers on Monday.
GAME 1
No. 12 Kankakee 4, Sandburg 3
Sandburg 100 400 0 — 3 8 4
Kankakee 120 001 x — 4 6 0
L-Ethan Krei 5.2 IP, 3 K, 1 BB
Key moments
• Down 3-1 in the top of the fourth inning, the Chargers tied the game on a two-out, two-run single to right by Brady Veselack.
• Following a leadoff double, the Cavaliers plated the go-ahead run with two out in the sixth. Starter Ethan Krei hit a batter and was relieved on the mound by Yasiel Trinidad, who issued back-to-back walks to force the leading run across.
• Joel Medina led off the seventh with a double for the Chargers, but a lineout and consecutive strikeouts ended the contest.
Sandburg standout
Krei was saddled with the loss despite a strong pitching line. The freshman lefthander from Metamora allowed two earned runs on six hits and a walk across 5.2 innings of work. Krei struck out three batters and threw 58 of 96 pitches for strikes.
Other top Chargers
• Medina — 3 for 4, two doubles, run
• Veselack — 1 for 3, two RBIs
GAME 2
No. 12 Kankakee 10, Sandburg 2
Sandburg 100 001 0 — 2 5 1
Kankakee 015 400 x — 10 11 5
L-Jace Wilkerson 3.1 IP, 5 K, 5 BB
Key moments
• A pair of Cavaliers errors gave Sandburg a 1-0 lead in the first. Medina reached and advanced to second after his groundball to third base, and he scored as Derek Cintron's grounder to shortstop was misplayed.
• Kankakee tied the game with a leadoff home run in the second and took the lead with a five-run third.
Sandburg standouts
Talen Davis, Colton Allen, Dayton Lundstrom, Josh Morales and Jose Narvaez each had a single for the Chargers.
