The Herkimer College baseball team opened its 2025 season with a doubleheader against Northern Essex Community College at the RussMatt Invitational, splitting the two games to start the season at 1-1.
Game 1: Herkimer Takes Season Opener with Late Surge
The Generals kicked off the season with an impressive 9-8 victory over Northern Essex in a back-and-forth contest. Despite an early deficit after Northern Essex put up four runs in the first two innings, Herkimer's offense found its rhythm. Freshman Marvin Hill was a key contributor at the plate, going 3-for-5 with a triple, home run and game-winning double. Freshman Shiryu Sato added two hits and two RBI. The Generals rallied late, using a four-run fourth inning to pull ahead. Sophomore Pitcher Evan Staroba (1-0) shut the door in relief, tossing the final three innings without allowing a hit while striking out one to earn the win.
Game 2: Northern Essex Evens Series with Strong Pitching Performance
In the nightcap, Herkimer fell short in a 6-5 loss as Northern Essex capitalized on timely hitting and solid pitching. Despite Jacob Serverson's 2-for-4 effort at the plate and extra-base hits from Marvin Hill and Obiel Sanchez, the Generals were unable to overcome a strong start from Northern Essex's pitching staff. Herkimer's Jace VanValkenburg took the mound to start, allowing five runs over 3.2 innings before giving way to David Denten (0-1), who finished the game with three innings of relief but was tagged with the loss.
Looking Ahead
The Generals will look to bounce back as they continue their spring trip in Florida. The team has a quick turnaround, playing Holyoke CC in a doubleheader tomorrow with the first game at 11:00 AM.
