Jayhawks Advance in Regional Tournament
Joe Russau leads MCC to victory with moster 22 point 11 rebound double double
March 5, 2025
The Muskegon Community College Jayhawks managed to survive the Montcalm Centurions 87-75 in the Great Lakes District B Quarterfinal. The Centurions started the game in a 2-3 zone to combat their lack of size and slow down Muskegon's lengthy forwards. The effort was successful through the first ten minutes of play, but the Jayhawks started to find some success on the perimeter, and Muskegon led Montcalm 41-32 heading into the second half. The second half was a more even affair, and the Centurions began to find their true stride offensively backed by a scorching hot 32-point performance from their 5'7 guard Taylen Carver and 23 points from Mason Dunn. But the Jayhawks offense was firing on all cylinders, outscoring Montcalm 46-43 in the second half to secure the tight-knit victory. Sophomore forward Joe Russau posted a double-double scoring 22 points and snagging 11 rebounds. Sophomore guard Will Chye added 19 points, seven rebounds, and seven assists. Chye also recently received the MCCAA North Player of the Week Award, his first MCCAA award. Sophomore Darius Williams added 18 points, four assists and two steals. The Jayhawks advance to the Great Lakes District B Semifinals where they will take on the seventh-ranked Kalamazoo Valley Community College Cougars. The game will take place on Thursday, March 6th at the Ballenger Fieldhouse (Mott Community College). Tip-off is scheduled for 6:00 PM.
