No. 23 Gaston College improves to 12-0 with 6th straight DH sweep
No. 23-ranked Gaston College extended its strong start to the season with a sixth straight doubleheader sweep on Friday at Gastonia's CaroMont Health Park.
The Rhinos (12-0) defeated Monroe University of Bronx, N.Y., by 10-2 and 10-1 scores in a pair of games shortened to five innings by the mercy rule.
Abigail Brewton and Savanna Mullins fired the complete game victories and the Rhinos banged out 21 hits in the victories.
Brewton threw a four-hitter with three strikeouts and Mullins followed with a two-hitter with four strikeouts.
"Brew and Mullins threw well tonight to keep them off balance," Gaston College coach Mike Steuerwald said. "Arissa Duff played an unbelievable game at third base in game 1 and our offense continued to string some great at bats.
"Kendall Bradshaw had a great night including a walk off grand slam in game 2."
Bradshaw (5 hits, 2 doubles, home run, 5 RBIs) led the offense.
She had lots of help as Sarah Johnson (4 hits, double, 3 RBIs), Mullins (2 hits, 2 doubles, 2 RBIs), Duff (2 hits), Mary Hinson (2 hits), Katelyn Brandon (2 hits), Grace Kealy (1 hit, 4 RBIs), Alayna Patrick (1 hit, double, 2 RBIs) also were productive at the plate.
The Rhinos get a day off before hosting perennial power at No. 5-ranked Division II team Louisburg in a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Sunday at CaroMont Health Park.
