Tribunes' Turnovers Costly in Sullivan Classic Loss to SCCC Generals
Despite strong performances from Skylah Kemp and Serenity Henderson, Monroe Community College's women's basketball team dropped a tightly contested game to #22 Sullivan County Community College.
LOCH SHELDRAKE, NY — MCC's women's basketball team lost the Sullivan Classic to the Sullivan County Community College Generals, 78-71, in their first road game of the season. The Tribunes battled for most of the game, but could not maintain their three-point lead heading into the fourth quarter.
Coming out slow, Monroe was down 16-21 in the first quarter, but rallied in the second to cut the Generals lead to three. After the third quarter, the Tribunes had a three-point advantage of their own, going into the fourth quarter leading 58-55. Unfortunately, they were unable to maintain momentum and were outscored by 10 points, bringing the final score to 78-71.
Skylah Kemp (Long Island, NY) turned in another stellar performance, scoring 25 points on 8-18 shooting and 9-10 from the free throw line, and completed a double-double with 10 rebounds. Serenity Henderson (La Verne, CA) also put points on the board, with her 20 on 7-19 shooting and going 4-13 from three. Maya Williams (Rochester, NY) almost put up a double-double of her own, accounting for 13 points and nine rebounds.
Despite the efforts of the team, and those three in particular, self-inflicted wounds really hurt the Tribunes. Monroe turned that ball over 22 times and 25 personal fouls. The score line could have been much worse for the Tribunes, who gave the Generals 32 chances at the free-throw line, but they were only able to finish 19. To their credit, the Tribunes were able to stay competitive in a game where they were their own worst enemy and had a chance to pull out the victory late.
Monroe will look to clean up on the mistakes of this first road test and will be eager to see the Generals again when they come back to Monagan Court to play Sullivan CCC again on November 9th.
