OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – As the Johnson County women's basketball team proved on Friday afternoon, even an undefeated team becomes vulnerable in the postseason.
The No. 2-ranked and top-seed in the Region 6 Division II Tournament, the Cavaliers (30-1) fell victim to the fourth-seeded Highland Scotties, falling 59-54. The loss snapped JCCC's three-year run as region champions and its 89-game home court-win streak.
Highland (26-4) jumped out the early lead at 22-9 in the first quarter, making 9-of-11 free throw attempts. The Cavaliers did not have a single attempt.
Johnson County got back into the game with a strong second quarter by holding Highland to just two baskets while making 5-of-14 shots including three baskets beyond the arc to go into the break down two points.
JCCC built a four-point lead early in the third quarter, but the Scotties outscored the Cavaliers 20-9 to close out the quarter to take a lead they would not relinquish.
For the first time this season, all five Johnson County starters were held to single digits. Reserve freshman guard Kara Stricklin led JCCC with 15 points.
Sophomore guard Taliyah Scott followed with eight points and freshman guard Tamia Smith added seven points, eight rebounds and five steals.
Highland was led by Madison Brittle with 17 points, followed by Cameron McNamara with 16 points and Brooklyn Pierce with nine points and a game-high 12 rebounds.
Despite the loss, Johnson County's season will most likely still be alive. Having been undefeated and ranked No. 2 all season, the Cavaliers will highly be invited to compete in the NJCAA Division II National Tournament by receiving an at-large bid.
