Cavaliers sweep series with Allen to open conference play

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The No. 22-ranked Johnson County baseball team completed a series sweep with Allen Saturday afternoon in Iola, winning 17-3 and 5-1 to improve to 17-5 on the season and 4-0 in conference. The Cavaliers took the first two games of the series at JCCC Thursday by the scores of 4-0 and 10-0. This was JCCC's third straight series win and second series sweep this season.

In the opener, the Cavaliers had the game out of reach before Allen recorded an out in the first inning plating nine runs, eight off Red Devils starter Manuel Toro. Johnson County added seven more runs in the top of the second for a 16-0 lead.

Six Cavaliers produced multiple hits in the game and seven drove in multiple runs. Designated hitter Max Towchik drove in four runs, catcher Miken Miller drove in three and outfielders Bo Shinkle, Jeremy Comer and Ryker Edwards, shortstop Chris Mancinas and third baseman Carter Kelley each drove two runners.

Coltin Watkins earned the win for the Cavaliers. The left-hander allowed zero hits and zero runs over three innings, striking out five batters.

In the series final, Miller provided pop in the middle of the lineup, putting the Cavaliers up 2-0 in the third with a two-run double. Shinkle led the Cavaliers with three singles and drove in a run, McClure was 2-for-4 with a run and first baseman Easton Roe had an RBI double.

On the hill, right-hander Denton Biller scattered five hits, giving up one run with three strikeouts over 5.1 innings pitched. Right-hander Hudson Byrd, right-hander Keston Holman and right-hander Luke Fricker each held Allen scoreless while combining for nine strikeouts.
