Kemp and Company Pull Off 30 Point Win in Home Opener
The Women's Basketball Tribunes blew out FLCC in a strong opening season victory.
ROCHESTER, NY — MCC's women's basketball team defeated the Lakers of Finger Lakes Community College 76-46. The game was very one-sided, as the Tribunes dominated defensively, holding Finger Lakes to under 50 points and 29.3% from the field. On the glass, they outrebounded the Lakers 52 to 27.
Despite the final result, the first quarter was close, ending with Monroe leading 16-13. To their credit, the Lakers shot 66.7% from three in the first quarter, to 0% from MCC, and had a hiring shooting percentage overall, at 41.7% compared to the Tribune's 34.8%. The difference in the quarter, however, was shooting volume, with the Tribs scoring eight of their 23 shots, as opposed to only five from FLCC.
The second quarter became much more lopsided, as Monroe found its footing defensively, winning the quarter 23-8. The Lakers in Q2 shot 4-18 for a 22.2% shooting percentage, and 0% from three. Meanwhile, the Tribunes were coming together on the boards, grabbing 10 defensive rebounds, 13 overall, and shot 100% from the free throw line, adding another six points from the charity stripe.
Out of the half, the Tribunes came out of the locker room with the same intensity, winning Q3 25-7, and putting the game almost out of reach. Monroe shot a resounding 64.3% from the field, grabbing six offensive rebounds, and added seven points from the foul line. Skylah Kemp (Long Island, NY) was a standout, scoring nine points in the quarter, accounting for five of the seven points on free throws.
With the game firmly in hand, the Tribunes focused most of their attention on the defense. Shanell Jenkins (Bronx, NY) and Maya Williams (Rochester, NY) both were effective on the boards, stealing three and four defensive rebounds, respectively. Williams was also instrumental offensively, scoring eight of the Tribunes' 12 points in the final quarter.
Other standout performers were Serenity Henderson (La Verne, CA) and Zarriah Eldridge (Rochester, NY) each scoring 17 points in the game, and Shania Estrich (Rochester, NY) who nearly had a double-double with nine boards and eight points.
The Tribunes will look to build on this momentum, as they travel to Loch Sheldrake, NY to take on #22 Sullivan County Community College.
