Golden Eagles break triple digits for the first time since 2018 in 104-34 win over Nebraska All-Stars

TORRINGTON, WY – It was an offensive showcase for the Laramie County Community College women's basketball team as they dominated the Nebraska All-Stars on Friday afternoon to the tune of a 104-34 stomping as they won their fifth game in their last six to improve to 8-7 on the season.

The game was the first since November 9, 2018, that the Golden Eagle scored more than 100 in a game, matching their 105 points in a 105-36 win over North Platte Community College.  Those are the only two times the feat has been accomplished since the return of women's basketball in the 2016 season.

The game opened with a 13-1 run from the Golden Eagles that pushed them to a 19-5 lead after just one quarter of play. The All-Stars did find a bit more offensive success in the second quarter, but so did the Golden Eagles who had one of their best shooting quarters of the year, putting up 30 points on the way to a 49-13 lead at the half.

The third quarter was more of the same, although a few turnovers led to some lay-ups for the All-Stars as they reached double digits in a quarter for the first time with eleven points, but 29 more points from the Golden Eagles extended the lead to 78-24.

LCCC closed the game with a dominant run, after seeing a slow start to the fourth that had the All-Stars actually outscoring the Golden Eagles 9-7, LCCC closed the final five minutes of the game with a 20-1 run as the defense clamped down to finish the game with confidence.

Six Golden Eagles finished in double digits for scoring including a 22-point game from Kelly Megown who finished an impressive 5-8 from the three-point line while also collecting nine rebounds. Marcela Pinedo-Saavedra finished with 16 points and eight rebounds and Flora Lukow added a 15-point, seven rebound game.

Nuria Florensa was the final started to finish with double figures, scoring 12 points but more impressively handed out eight assists for a new career high for the freshman. Joining her in a career high and a tie for the team lead in assists was Sabela Carro, who tacked on eight points, eight assists, and 12 rebounds to finish just shy of a double-double.

Kiera Williams (13) and Irelynd Barnes (11) finished of the Golden Eagles in double figures.

LCCC shot 45 percent from three in their best effort from deep on the season and finished the game with 61 rebounds, including 21 on the offensive side. They also had 13 steals in the game, and only turned the ball over eight times.

They will wrap up the 2024 portion of the year when they take on the Wyoming All Stars on Saturday afternoon with the opening tip of the game scheduled for 12:00 pm. Information on this game and the rest of the Golden Eagles schedule is available at www.golccc.com.
