In a closely contested Panhandle Conference showdown, the Gulf Coast State Commodores outworked the Pensacola State Pirates to secure a 68-67 victory. The Commodores proved to be the tougher squad throughout the matchup, showcasing their physicality.
The Pirates found themselves trailing 36-33 at halftime but remained within striking distance. In the final moments of the game, Pensacola State had a golden opportunity to snatch the win. With just 8 seconds left, Gulf Coast threw away an inbounds pass, giving the Pirates a chance to win the game. However, Amarion Savage's shot missed, and although Dimitri Clerc grabbed the rebound, his put-back attempt rimmed out, sealing the victory for the Commodores.
Coach Pena expressed his disappointment in the Pirates' lack of response to Gulf Coast's physical play. "We needed to match their toughness, and we fell short," he said.
Pensacola State will face another tough challenge on Saturday when they host No. 11 Chipola College.
