DMACC men's basketball team tops ICCC for 11th straight win

 

Sophomore Da'Shon Fisher of Iowa City led four players in double figures with 21 points as the DMACC men's basketball team pushed its winning streak to 11 games behind a 79-62 win over Iowa Central Community College (ICCC) February 5 inside the DMACC gymnasium.

 

Freshmen Andrew Austin of Rock Rapids and Dylan Omweno of Apple Valley, Minn., tallied 12 points apiece and freshman Jaden Jefferson of Forney, Texas, added 10 points as DMACC improved to 23-2 overall and 12-1 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) with its 11th straight win. The Bears have a one-game lead over Kirkwood Community College (KCC) in conference play.

 

DMACC, ranked fourth in this week's Division II poll from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), led by as many as eight points in the opening half before an 11-2 run from the Tritons gave them a 28-27 advantage at intermission.

 

The game was tied at 36 four minutes into the second half when a three-pointer from sophomore Trevian Carson of Des Moines gave DMACC a 39-36 advantage and the Bears led the rest of the way, outscoring ICCC 52-34 in the half. DMACC led by as many as 28 points, 74-46, with just more than six minutes to play.

DMACC, which swept its season series with the Tritons, shot 54 percent, hitting 28 of 52 field goal attempts, including 11-of-28 from three-point range. The Bears made 12 of 15 free throw attempts.

 

ICCC, which fell to 12-11 and 6-8, connected on 27 of 69 field goal attempts for 39 percent. The Tritons were 5-of-22 from three-point range and 3-of-9 from the free throw line.

 

DMACC came away with a 36-32 advantage in rebounding with Carson's 10 rebounds leading the way. Jefferson had six rebounds and Austin came away with five. Carson topped the Bears in assists with six and Omweno led the way in steals with two. Austin contributed three blocked shots.

 

The DMACC men's basketball team will play Ellsworth Community College (ECC) Feb. 8 at Iowa Falls. The Panthers are 17-7 overall and 7-6 in the ICCAC, including a 94-81 loss to DMACC Jan. 18 inside the DMACC gymnasium. ECC was ranked ninth in the NJCAA Division II poll at the time but has since fallen to 19th.
