
MILLINGTON, TN – Walters State opened up TCCAA play on Friday afternoon against Southwest Tennessee, falling 10-9 in the opener before bouncing back with a 16-6 win.
With the split, the Lady Senators moved to 11-10 overall and 1-1 in TCCAA play.
GAME ONE: Southwest Tennessee 10, Walters State 9
In game one, the Lady Senators fell behind early and could not complete a late comeback.
At the plate, Addison Beech had three hits, including a triple, and drove in two runs while Alayna Ross homered, doubled and drove in three runs. Allie Seritt had two hits and two RBIs, as well.
In the circle, Allie Jones got the start and threw 0.2 innings. Jones gave up four runs on three hits and struck out two. Ross replaced Jones with two outs in the first and got the next two outs, giving up four runs, one earned, on no hits. Makayla Ramsey was next in line and she pitched the final 4.2 innings. Ramsey gave up two runs, none earned, on three hits and struck out two.
The Lady Senators started quick with two runs in the first, as Kendal Mason singled home Beech and Ross doubled in Mason to make it 2-0. However, Southwest scored four in the bottom of the first and four in the bottom of the second to go up 8-2.
Needing a response, the Lady Senators cut the lead in the fourth as Seritt singled in Nora Mack and Faith Whited to make it 8-4. Southwest got those runs back in the fifth, but Walters State cut the lead to 10-9 with five runs in the fifth. Beech got things going with a single that scored two runs. After Mason grounded out but scored Beech, Ross cut the lead to one with a two-run homer over the fence in center.
In the seventh, the Lady Senators put runners on second and third with two outs but a ball back to the pitcher ended the game.
GAME TWO: Walters State 16, Southwest Tennessee 6 (6 Innings)
In game two, the Lady Senators scored 16 runs on 16 hits and picked up a run-rule victory.
Ross hit her second home run of the day in the game and drove in three runs, while Seritt homered and had two RBIs. Randi Delong drove in three runs, and Abbie Young and Brooklyn Copley each had two RBIs. Young had three hits, as well.
In the circle, Summer Smith got the start. Smith threw 3.1 innings, allowing five runs on seven hits while striking out two. Emma Myatt replaced Smith with an out in the fourth and threw the final 2.2 innings. Myatt gave up one run on one hit and picked up strikeouts on six of the eight outs she recorded.
The Lady Senators again started quick in the game with four runs in the top of the first. Those runs came on a Mason groundout that scored Beech, a Young RBI single and a Copley two-RBI single.
In the second, the Lady Senators scored four more times to go up 8-0. Delong started things with an RBI single, and Ross doubled home Delong. An error scored Ross to make it 7-0, and it was 8-0 after Young single home Seritt.
Southwest responded with four runs in the bottom of the third, but Ross made it 10-4 in the fourth with a two-run home run. The Saluqis got those runs back with two runs in the bottom of the fourth, but Walters State broke things open with six runs in the sixth. Seritt scored the first two runs of the inning with a home run over the fence in center, and Brenna Hunley scored Young on a sacrifice fly to make it 13-6. It was 14-6 after an RBI single by Mason, and Delong made it 16-6 with a two-RBI double.
Myatt struck out the side in the sixth and ended the game.
