Baseball Improves to 8-0

Freeport, Ill. - The Elgin Community College baseball team kept its winning streak alive with an 11-6 win at Highland on Friday.

The Spartans improve to 8-0 on the season.

Brendan Campbell picked up his second win of the season as he pitched five innings and recorded five strikeouts. Lucas Aguirre came in for relief as he pitched four innings and struckout eight batters.

Chris Lara opened the game with a triple and scored on Jack Kerno's single to right field. ECC loaded the bases after Aiden Kashuba was hit by a pitch and Andrew Flynn earned a walk. Kerno scored on a wild pitch for an early 2-0 advantage.

Highland tied up the game in the bottom of the third inning.

Jaden Alberson led off the fourth inning with a walk, followed by a double from Lara. Both scored on Nick Weaver's hard hit single to center field. Weaver advanced to second on a passed ball and to third on a wild pitch before scoring on Kerno's groundout. Kashuba walked before scoring on a clutch triple from Cole Clemens to make it a 6-2 ballgame.

The Cougars scored a run in the bottom of the fourth and fifth innings to tighten the score to 6-4.

Alberson got on base after being hit by a pitch, stole second and scored on Lara's second double of the game.

Highland countered with one run in the seventh and eighth innings to trail 7-6.

Austin Alonso led off the ninth with a walk and advanced to second on Alberson's groundout. Lara earned a walk to get on base. Weaver hit an inside the park home run to score three runs while Kerno followed up with a solo homerun to increase the lead to 11-6.

ECC saw three up and three down with a groundout and Aguirre striking out two of the batters to hold onto the win.

The Spartans are back on the road to face No. 9 Heartland on Monday at 3 p.m.
