CCBC Essex
Erie Community ended their spring travel vs CCBC Essex on Saturday. The Kats took game one and forced extra innings before dropping game two.
The Kats outsted CCBC Essex 6-3 in the first game. Essex was the first to get on the board in the first when one run scored on another play.
Zack Bedard singled down the left field line, which helped Erie tie the game at one in the top of the second. The Kats took the lead in the top of the third inning, scoring on a passed ball and CCBC Essex committed an error, each scoring one run.
Aaron Knuutila stepped on the hill first for Erie. The starter allowed two hits and one run over four innings, striking out three and walking six. Nick Gold appeared in relief for the Kats.
EJ Williams went 2-for-3 at the plate and led the team with two runs batted in. Erie had a strong eye at the plate, accumulating nine walks for the game. Austin Deitz and Eric Calder led the team with two walks each and Erie turned two double plays in the game.
A walk-off left the Kats on the wrong end of a 3-2 defeat in the second game of the double header. The game was tied at two in the bottom of the eighth when Essex singled, scoring one run.
Both teams were strong on the bump. CCBC Essex pitchers struck out 10, while Erie CC Kats sat down six.
After Essex opened the scoring in the first, Iyad Ansari singled down the right field line, which helped Erie tie the game at one in the top of the third.
Austin Deitz started on the mound for the Kats. The starter gave up one hit and two runs (one earned) over seven innings, striking out six and walking three.
Ansari drove the middle of the lineup, leading Erie with two runs batted in. The catcher went 2-for-4 on the day.
After being rained out on Sunday, the Kats finish the trip 6-9 and will play at home on Saturday, March 22nd when they host Finger Lakes Community College.
