WICHITA, Kan. – The Arizona Western Matadors (15-1-2) scored two unanswered to goals to come from behind to beat Miami Dade (13-5-2) 2-1 in double overtime in the Matadors' first game of pool play at the NJCAA DI Men's Soccer Championship at Scheels Stryker Sports Complex.
Steven Leblanc scored the game-winning goal in the 110th minute, tapping a ball in off a corner kick from Nael Redjam with 23 seconds remaining to give the Matadors the 2-1 win.
Arizona Western and Miami Dade played a scoreless first 45 minutes battling the elements with strong wind gusts and light rain. The Sharks opened the scoring 25 seconds into the second half, scoring on a cross into the six-yard box, putting Miami Dade up 1-0.
The Matadors leveled the score in the 80th minute, thanks to Iman Ouedraogo, who blasted in a ball from the top of the box to tie the game at 1-1.
Miami Dade almost won the game in the 108th minute, hitting the post on a strike from outside the box before the Matadors grabbed the game-winner in the 110th minute.
Matadors' keeper Esteban Gonzalez made seven saves to help lead the Matadors to the win in the final game of the second day of the NJCAA DI Men's Soccer Championship.
Arizona Western continues pool play on Tuesday, November 19, taking on Cowley County at 4:30 pm Arizona time with the winner advancing to the national semifinals.
