Bears Reach District Semifinals with Win over Lions

MESQUITE, Texas – Dallas College Brookhaven beat Dallas College Mountain View, 25-19, 27-25, 25-17, in the National Junior College Athletic Association Division III South District quarterfinals Wednesday night at Dallas College Eastfield.

The win sends the fourth-seeded Bears (15-13) on to Friday's 5:30 p.m. semifinals against top-seeded Eastfield (28-1).

Brookhaven's Lyrick Bridges had 11 kills, a block, an ace and eight digs, while hitting 333. Caroline Simpson had 10 kills, 11 digs and an ace, and hit .292.

The Bears advanced to the district semifinals for the 21st straight year.

Remington McCarty's ace and three straight service points put the Bears up 13-10 in the opening set. A kill by Bridges helped push the lead to 17-11. Mountain View cut it to 18-13, but Simpson banged a ball down to stretch the lead to seven before closing out the set.

With Gracie George serving, the Lions (8-24) opened a 7-3 lead in the second set. They stretched it to 15-9 on a Destinee Johnson kill. The Bears drew even at 18-18 on Emma Borders' serve. Mountain View held a 21-20 lead before Sarah Parr's kill two serves later put the Bears up, 22-21. Mountain View crept back ahead, 24-23, on Skylar Daniels' kill before Bridges put down a kill to make it 25-24. The Lions won the next point, but Bridges answered with a kill, and Carmen Brown tapped home set point as the Bears took a 2-0 lead in the match.

Simpson served Brookhaven to a 20-15 lead in the third set. Brooke Tyler's dump-set kill gave the Bears a six-point lead. Bridges' block and a kill by McKenzie Mitchell put the match away.

Mitchell had six kills, and hit .500. McCarty added six kills and four of her team's seven aces. Brooke Tyler had seven kills, 11 digs and eight assists. Lauren Howson and Parr each had four kills without committing an attack error. Howson hit .444, and Parr .308. Mia Gonzalez had 17 assists, nine digs and an ace. Borders had 11 assists and seven digs. Fiona Larsen had 11 digs.

Mountain View's Nyah Bumpas and Sydnei Pena each had six kills. Pena added 10 digs, two aces and a solo block. Daniels had five kills. Kahmya Rice and Jade McCafferty each had 13 assists. Rice also had 16 digs and an ace. Ceciliana Pena finished with 20 digs.
