After falling in the first game, SUNY Broome could not hang on to its lead in game two and was swept by Cuyahoga to open its season.
On the road to begin the 2025 campaign, the Hornets scored first in game one but then trailed 20-1 after four innings and ultimately lost 20-4 after five innings. While the Hornets put runners on first and second base with no outs in the first inning, they could not push any runs across the board. A similar result happened in the second when Broome loaded the bases with no outs, but could only score one run. After some missed opportunities early, the contest got away from the Hornets late.
Peyton Farrell got the start on the bump for Broome and pitched well, walking no Cuyahoga batters, but could not escape trouble as the Hornets' defense struggled behind him. Joseph Chermak came into the game in relief and allowed just two earned runs.
Nicholas Ragonese and Darlyn De Los Angeles were each 2-2 in the opening leg of the doubleheader, and Michael Albertine drove in a run, but the offensive highlight from the contest was a massive three-run home run by Carmelo Alessandro. Alessandro is an incredible testament to the greatness of opportunities afforded by junior college athletics, as he is a 34 year old student-athlete and a father who works as a bar manager in Syracuse, NY and commutes to college where he takes 16 credits. In his first career college baseball contest, his first hit registered was a home run. Antonio Soto registered his first collegiate career hit as well.
In the second leg of the doubleheader, SUNY Broome took a 2-1 lead after two innings, but Tri-C scored four unanswered runs the rest of the way to close out a 5-2 win. Jacob McTigue and Jason Kithcart Jr. combined to throw the ball really well for the Hornets, leading to a tight battle all throughout the game. McTigue limited the Triceratops to just three earned runs over four innings, striking out four. In two innings of work, Kithcart Jr. allowed just one run.
Offensively, Alessandro was a key contributor yet again, getting SUNY Broome going early with an RBI single. Nathan Moses contributed another clutch RBI. In his first collegiate at-bat, Kaiden Cannistra hit a double.
Alessandro was 2-6 with a home run and four RBI on the day, while Ragonese was 2-4 with two walks, two runs, a stolen base, and a hit-by-pitch.
The Hornets will carry an 0-2 record into a doubleheader against conference rival Tompkins Cortland on Saturday, March 15.
