Sophomore Mary Walker of Fonda scored 26 points and freshman Chloe Costello of Northwood added 21 points as the DMACC women's basketball team upset Ellsworth Community College (ECC), 97-48, January 18 inside the DMACC gymnasium.
With the win, DMACC improved to 13-6 overall and 6-3 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC). ECC, ranked 17th in the most recent Division II poll from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), fell to 14-3 and 7-2.
The game was never close after DMACC opened up a 25-17 lead in the first quarter. The Bears outscored the Panthers 22-9 in the second quarter for a 47-26 advantage at halftime and led 71-38 after three quarters.
Freshmen Whitney Jensen of Remsen and Breeley Clayburg of Coon Rapids joined Walker and Costello in double figures with 11 and 10 points respectively.
DMACC shot 44 percent in the win, making 36 of 82 field goal attempts, including 11-of-27 from three-point range. They were 14-of-15 from the free throw line.
Freshman Reagan Wheeler of Cedar Falls pulled down six rebounds and Clayburg, sophomore Joy Beran of Riceville and freshman Kaylee Stratton of Tiffin had five apiece as DMACC came away with a 46-28 advantage on the boards. Stratton led the Bears in assists with four and Beran came away with three steals.
The DMACC women's basketball team will face Northeast (Neb.) Community College (NECC) Jan. 22 at Norfolk, Neb. NECC is 14-4 overall and 6-3 in the ICCAC. The Hawks defeated DMACC, 63-57, when the two teams played Dec. 4 inside the DMACC gymnasium.
