ROSWELL, N.M. – The Western Nebraska Community College baseball team dropped a pair of games to New Mexico Military Institute on Saturday to even their record at 2-2 on the season.
WNCC opened the season with 5-1 and 12-8 wins over NMMI on Friday. On Saturday, NMMI earned 8-0 and 13-4 wins.
WNCC will be back on the road this weekend when they travel to Great Bend, Kansas, for doubleheaders on Saturday and Sunday.
The first game saw WNCC manage just four hits in the loss. The game, however, was a defensive contest with NMMI leading 1-0 after four innings. It was the fifth and sixth innings that turned the tide for the Cougars as NMMI scored four in the fifth and three in the sixth for the 8-0 win.
WNCC was led by Cooper Wilson with two hits. The other two hits came from Matt Levesque and Garrison Burns.
The second game saw the Cougars get behind the 8-ball early as NMMI plated four runs in the first and second innings for an 8-0 lead. NMMI led 9-0 when the Cougars started to find some offense with three runs in the fifth.
The fifth started when Kyler Adams was hit by a pitch. Levesque followed with a double to put two on. Vaughn Wilson then had the big blow with a 3-run home run to make it 9-3.
NMMI answered with two in the bottom of the fifth. Neither team scored in the sixth. WNCC had one in the seventh as Cooper Wilson had a 2-out single followed by a Kensei Oikawa single. Wilson then scored on a wild pitch to make it 11-4. NMMI scored two runs in the bottom of the inning to end the game via the 8-run rule.
WNCC finished with 10 hits in the contest. Levesque led the way with three hits, including two doubles. Cooper Wilson had two hits along with his brother Vaughn. Vaughn had a home run with three RBIs.
