Highlanders win two on day two in Alabama
The McLennan Highlanders closed out their trip to Alabama for the JUCO Extravaganza with a pair of wins.
The Highlanders got the 13-2 run-rule victory over the Wallace Dothan Governors in game one of the day. Kynlei Chapman picked up the win in the circle.
McLennan took control early, scoring 11 runs in the top of the first inning. Mickayla Tosch singled, stole second and scored on a double by Macie Jansky. Aynsli Lawson single, and Madison Garcia followed with a three-run homer. Tehya Pitts singled, stole second, advanced to third on an error and scored on a double by Ally Thompson. MJ Nicholson singled and Alyssa Moreno walked. Tosch followed with a fielder's choice, scoring Thompson and putting Nicholson out at third. Trinity Allen then singled to score Moreno, and Jansky doubled to score Tosch and Allen. Lawson singled and stole second. Garcia singled to score Jansky, and Lawson scored on an error.
Another Highlander run scored in the fourth. Delanie Roeder and Nicholson both singled. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch, and Roeder scored on an error.
Wallace Dothan's first run came in the bottom of the fourth. Elly Castle singled and Sadie Hanks reached on an error. Castle then scored on a ground out by Erin Curry.
McLennan added another run in the top of the fifth. Jansky and Lawson both singled, and Natalie Klenda walked to load the bases. Jansky then scored on a fielder's choice by Roeder.
The Governors rounded out the scoring with a run in the bottom of the fifth. Ella Brooke Barefield walked and Aimee Senn reached on an error. Libby Buchanan also singled, loading the bases. Barefield then scored on a ground out by Rebekah Rowell.
McLennan closed out the day with a 6-4 win over the Snow Badgers.
Snow scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Molly Roberts reached on an error, and scored on a double by Hailey Mangum. Ayden Fitch was hit by the pitch, and Mangum scored on a sacrifice bunt by Brenley Boydston.
The Highlanders' got on the board with a run in the top of the second. Garcia and Pitts both singled. Thompson then singled to score Garcia.
McLennan took the lead with two runs in the fourth. Garcia and Pitts both singled and scored on a triple by Thompson.
The Badgers regained the lead with two runs in the bottom of the fifth. Moki Maughan singled and Nev Carrasquel reached on an error. Mangum then doubled to score both runners.
The Highlanders sealed the win with three runs in the top of the seventh. Tosch tripled and scored on a single by Allen. Jansky then tripled to score Allen, and Lilli Piersons singled to score Jansky.
McLennan opens conference play Wednesday, hosting North Central for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
