RedTail Softball Sweeps to End Weekend Trip

The RedTails came to play on Sunday, March 9th when they faced State Fair Community College in a double header. The RedTails won game one 7-2 and won game two 6-5.

 

Game One: 7 (HCC), 2 (SFCC)

The RedTails started in a deficit, giving up two quick runs in the bottom of the first, putting them down 2-0.

Hawkeye fought back in the top of the third when Lucy Lebo singled and scored on a Mya Chamberlin double. Lizzy Hamand singled herself to advance Chamberlin to third, who quickly scored from a passed ball. Jordan Eads then hit a single to score Hamand.

Up 3-2, the RedTails weren't done just yet. In the top of the fifth, Hamand started a two out rally with a single, and Dharma Woodruff hit a triple to score Hamand. Eads then put the ball in play to force a Roadrunner error to score Woodruff to make the score 5-2 in favor of the RedTails.

Hawkeye put up their last two runs of the game in the top of the sixth. Delaney Eickert started with a double and advanced to third on a Courtney Hemsley single. Rylie Devlin put the ball into play to score Eickert and advance Hemsley. Lebo then hit a sacrifice fly to score Hemsley, making the score 7-2.

Two quick defensive innings gave the RedTails the win. At the plate, Chamberlin led the way with two hits, one run scored, and one run batted in. Hamand added two hits and two runs scored. Eads also had two hits in the game. On the mound, Chamberlin went the distance pitching seven complete innings, giving up just five hits, two runs, zero earned, and eleven strikeouts.

 

Game Two: 6 (HCC), 5 (SFCC)

The game was quiet until the bottom of the third, when State Fair scored their first run of the game.

Hawkeye responded quickly in the top of the fourth. Eickert started the inning with a walk and advanced to second on a ball put in play by Emilee Bergmann. Olivia Techam then put the ball in play to advance Eickert to third. On two outs, Hemsley hit a single to score one run. Devlin then picked up a walk, and Lebo hit a three-run homerun to go up 4-1.

The Roadrunners responded and scored two more runs, making it a one run ball game.

In the bottom of the fifth, State Fair took the lead, going up 5-4.

Not to be outdone, the RedTails found a way to score. Adelyn Sienknecht put the ball in play to reach base on a Roadrunner error. With two outs, Eickert started a rally with a double to score Sienknecht. Bergmann then forced another error to score Eickert, giving the RedTails a one run lead.

Good defense by the RedTails shut down the Roadrunners chance to score, giving them the 6-5 win.

Lebo led at the plate, going 2-5 with one run scored and three runs batted in. Eickert, Hemsley, Devlin, and Eads each had a hit of their own. On the mound, Eads got the start, going 4.1 innings, giving up seven hits, four earned runs, and two strikeouts. Sienknecht snagged the win, going 2.2 innings, giving up just two hits, one walk, and two strikeouts.

 

The RedTails move to 6-8 on the season. They are back in action on Tuesday, March 11th at Iowa Western Community College. Game times are set for 2:00 and 4:00 PM.
