The Marian University Ancilla Men's Basketball team began the conference season 2-0 over the first week of MCCAA play, but entering Saturday's matchup with the Lansing Stars, they were unfortunately without three starters and six players in total, including their top three scorers. Still, the seven young men who played battled from beginning to end without hesitation, falling 92-68 to the visiting Stars.
Lansing didn't waste any time getting to it, using their superior size, length, and depth to get after the Chargers early and often, leading at the half, 45-21. The Stars even applied full-court defensive pressure throughout the entirety of the game, ensuring they would control an easy win, but Marian Ancilla battled to a 47-47 second half tie.
There were many opportunities for the score to become worse than it was and get out of control, but the effort shown by the Charger players in the second half was admirable, as they didn't quit, combatting each Lansing run with a run of their own. Those missing this game were also loud and energetic from the bench in support.
6-5 Sophomore forward Jayden Sanders posted a team-leading 16 points and a game-high 18 rebounds in the loss. He has become a regular to the double-double club recently. Sophomore guard B.J. Isom, in his first Varsity action of the season, came off the bench to contribute 15 points and 3 rebounds, while Freshman forward Davione Doty added 14 points and 4 rebounds in a starting role.
The Men's Basketball team will now attempt to get back on track with two more MCCAA conference games this coming week. Wednesday, January 22nd, they host the Grand Rapids Raiders who currently sit at an impressive 15-2 and 2-0 in MCCAA play. Then, Saturday, January 25th, the Chargers will head to NJCAA Division-II #8 Kalamazoo Valley Community College to take on the 15-1 (2-0) Cougars who are also one of the top teams in the MCCAA. Please come out to support the team, if you are able!!
