
DANVILLE, Ill. – The No. 11 seed Johnson County men's basketball team advanced to the consolation final at the NJCAA Division II National Tournament with an 81-75 victory over Henry Ford Friday morning at Mary Miller Gymnasium in Danville, Ill. The victory improved JCCC to 31-5, tying the season record for most wins in program history.
The Cavaliers will face tNo. 9 Florida State at Jacksonville on Saturday, March 22 at noon CST.
Five players scored in double figures for Johnson County led by sophomore guard Steven Samuels with 17 points on 5-of-19 shooting with two 3-pointers along with 5-of-6 free throws.
Freshman forward Tavian Cruse posted a double-double with 10 points and 13 rebounds. His 13 boards tie the second-best game by a Cavaliers in national tournament play.
Sophomore Brandon Mann tallied 15 points and was one rebound shy of the double-double. Sophomore forward Traeger Rader provided 14 points of the bench, hitting 5-of-6 shots including 4-of-5 beyond the 3-point arc. Freshman guard Joey Robinson contributed 13 points, six rebounds, three assists, three steals and two blocks.
Freshman point guard Gavin Harvey dished out five assists to go along with four points and two steals and sophomore guard Mauryon Turner connected on 3-of-4 shots for six points.
Henry Ford also had five player post double digits led by Gerald Dottin, III with 14 points.
Johnson County's ability to get to the free throw line and convert was key to the victory. JCCC was 16-for-23 at the line, while Henry Ford made only 10 trips, converting on seven.
