No. 5 Bulldogs close out regular season Thursday
PERKINSTON — No. 5 Mississippi Gulf Coast moved up a couple spots in the national rankings after an eventful week in the top-10, and the Bulldogs will close out the regular season Thursday when Hinds visits.
Don't overlook the Eagles when you see their 2-6 record. Both wins have come in the last three weeks, including a 34-27 overtime win over Pearl River last Thursday.
"It looks like they really found an identity," Gulf Coast coach Jack Wright said. "They're getting a lot better quarterback play and running the football better. Their defense is not giving up big plays. Coach (Larry) Williams does a great job, and we've all been in those situations where you have a young team, and it takes a few weeks to get it going. It looks like they've got it going."
Kickoff at A.L. May Memorial Stadium is set for 7 p.m. It will be University of Southern Mississippi Night and Cancer Awareness Night, so fans are encouraged to wear pink for the regular-season finale. Buy your tickets ahead of time to save money. It costs $10 for adults or $7 for youth online, or $15 and $10 at the gate. Tickets are available at http://mgcccbulldogs.com/tickets, and the game will be streamed at https://mgcccbulldogs.com/watch.
The Bulldogs (7-1, 4-1 MACCC South) are guaranteed a playoff spot as one of the top two seeds in the division. They are tied with East Central for first, and a win would earn them a share of the South title for the sixth straight year. It would also mean a home playoff game if Southwest Mississippi upsets East Central in Summit.
Hinds (2-6, 2-3) has seen improved play from freshman quarterback Jabari Watson in the last three games. In their victories, he's run for 190 yards and thrown four touchdowns passes. Wright said right tackle Saquan Miles is one of the best offensive linemen he's seen in the league, and defensive lineman Devarrick Woods creates havoc wherever he lines up.
This has been a short week for the Bulldogs, who celebrated Homecoming with a 63-0 win over Coahoma on Saturday.
"We really watched a lot of film this week," Wright said. "We want to eliminate mental mistakes and create some accountability within position groups and within the team. We want to develop some leaders. Every game is critical, and we take this game very seriously. We spent as much time as we possibly could getting ready for this game considering it's a shorter window."
Defensive back Jamarrien Burt (So., Ocala, Fla./Forest) has been making an impact on the field for the Bulldogs since returning to the lineup.
"He suffered an injury in the second game of the year," Wright said. "It was a setback, and he missed a little time, but now he's back in shape and playing at a high level. We're asking a lot out of him, and he had a really good game the other night. He's a resilient player who keeps coming back, and it's paying off for him here at the end of the year."
