Midnight came early as Cinderella's glass slipper broke and the Mississippi Delta Community College Lady Trojans dream for a Region 23 Championship fell short in Poplarville, 83-65 to the #2 seed Itawamba Lady Indians.
The incredible run through Region 23 gave the Lady Trojans a 21-7 overall record. The Lady Indians finish with a 25-5 overall record and await the next round of the post season. There are at large bids that will all be decided on Sunday.
Janiah Caples led the Lady Trojans with 26 points. Lauren Nelson was the only other Lady Trojan in double figures as she had 11 points. As a team, MDCC hit 29-of-68 field goals for 43 percent, were 3-of-9 from three-point land for 33 percent but struggled at the free throw line hitting only 4-of-12 for 33 percent. The Lady Trojans did force the Lady Indians into 21 turnovers while only giving up 10 themselves.
Itawamba hit 32-of-62 field goals for 52 percent and hit 4-of-12 three pointers for 33 percent. The biggest difference came at the free throw line where the Lady Indians nailed 15-of-20 for 75 percent. The Lady Indians outrebounded the Lady Trojans 52-21. Jestiny Dixon led all scorers with 30 points for the Lady Indians.
