Balanced Performance Lifts SMCC Softball to Sweep at Scottsdale CC

PHOENIX ---

The South Mountain Community College softball team (20-12, 13-7 ACCAC) swept an ACCAC doubleheader at Scottsdale CC on Mar. 22, winning 9-1 (5 innings) in game one and 2-0 in game two. Sophomore Sabrina Erran and freshman Jerzey Jarvis had three hits apiece, and freshman Alyssa Jemio tossed five innings with three strikeouts and zero earned runs in the game-one victory. In game two, sophomore Sadie Su'a tossed a one-hit, complete-game shutout with 12 strikeouts, while sophomore Nadia Rascon doubled and scored twice in game two to complete the sweep.

Game One Recap

SMCC scored in every inning and plated two runs in the first, third, fourth, and fifth to post the 9-1, five-inning victory.

Sophomore Dionna Leanio led off the game with a single and, after a Rascon double, scored on an RBI base hit from Jemio. Rascon would score on the play as a result of an error.

In the second, Erran doubled with one out and scored on an RBI single from Jarvis. The fourth inning saw the Cougars mount a two-out rally. Freshman Tazia Blake singled, followed by consecutive doubles from Erran and Jarvis, and SMCC led 5-0.

After SCC got one back in the third, Leanio and sophomore Jada Montoya strung together consecutive singles to start the fourth. A fly-ball error off the bat of Rascon allowed both to score.

Montoya then put the run rule into effect with a two-out, two-run double in the fifth to score Erran and Jarvis.

Erran and Jarvis both went a perfect 3 for 3 in the win. Erran scored three times and had a pair of doubles, while Jarvis had three RBIs, a double, and a stolen base.

Leanio was 2 for 3 with two runs and walk, and Montoya was 2 for 4 with two RBIs and a run.

Jemio improved to 5-3 on the season with a five-inning complete game. She allowed six hits, one unearned run, and zero walks to go with three strikeouts.

Game Two Recap

Game two was a pitcher's duel where Su'a prevailed, largely thanks to a dozen strikeouts. She improved to 6-2 on the year by yielding one hit and five walks over seven frames. She also fanned 12 SCC batters in a Feb. 18, 8-1 home victory.

SMCC scored single runs in the first and third to post the win. Rascon doubled with two outs in the first and scored on an RBI single from Jemio.

In the third, Rascon walked to start the inning, moved to second after Jemio walked, and tagged up on a flyout by Su'a. Erran drove her home with a sac fly to give SMCC a 2-0 advantage.

Rascon finished 2 for 3 with two runs, a double, and a walk, and Jemio was 2 for 4 with an RBI. Sophomore Elise Saucedo also had a pair of hits in the win.
