Bears Softball splits with Hinds Lady Eagles

The Baton Rouge Bears traveled to Raymond, Mississippi, this afternoon to face off against the Hinds Community College Lady Eagles in a doubleheader at Rene T. Warren Field. The Bears and the Lady Eagles ended the day with a split; the Lady Eagles won game one 5-0, while the Bears took game two 4-3.
Game One:
Hinds shut out the Bears in the first game of today's doubleheader, winning by a score of 5-0.
The Lady Eagles opened the scoring with two runs in the bottom of the first inning, taking a 2-0 lead. They added another run in the third inning, extending their lead to 3-0. The Bears struggled to find timely hits and string together any offense. In the fifth inning, the Bears had their best chance to score when they loaded the bases: Eve Fruge reached on a single, Rylee Guthrie was hit by a pitch, and Kennedy Kelly added another single. However, the Lady Eagles escaped the inning by inducing a ground ball for an out at home plate and a fly out to end the threat. Hinds then tacked on two more runs in the fifth inning to take a commanding 5-0 lead. The Bears went down in order in the sixth and seventh innings, ultimately losing 5-0.
Devyn Latiolais started in the circle for the Bears and was charged with the loss; she pitched 5.2 innings, allowing 5 runs (4 earned) on 7 hits, with 3 strikeouts and 1 walk. Maddie Robinson pitched in relief. K. Forsyth started for Hinds and earned the victory after pitching a complete game, allowing 0 runs on 4 hits, with 4 strikeouts and 1 walk.
Hinds outhit Baton Rouge 7 to 4, and the Bears committed two errors in the game.

Game Two:
In the second game of the doubleheader, the Bears held off a late rally from the Lady Eagles to secure a 4-3 victory.
The Bears struck first, scoring a run in the second inning when Mary Wicke led off with an infield single, stole second, and came home on an error by the Lady Eagles' shortstop. The Lady Eagles took the lead in the bottom of the third inning, scoring two runs to make it 2-1. The Bears tied the game at 2 in the top of the fourth when Eve Fruge reached base on an error, later scoring on a double by Olivia Burns.
In the fifth inning, the Bears regained the lead, scoring two runs for a 4-2 advantage. Lindsey Hudson and Ashlyn Hebert hit back-to-back singles. Wicke grounded into a fielder's choice, and Jardyn Wheeler then singled up the middle, scoring Hebert and Wicke. The Lady Eagles responded with a leadoff solo home run from O. Rees in the bottom of the fifth, closing the gap to 4-3. Bears pitcher Maddie Robinson came in relief and dominated, striking out 8 of the 10 batters she faced to secure the victory for the Bears.
Olivia Burns started in the circle for the Bears, earning the win after pitching 4 innings and allowing 3 runs on 6 hits, with 3 strikeouts. Maddie Robinson pitched 3 innings in relief, giving up 1 hit and striking out 8. K. Chandler started for the Lady Eagles and took the loss, pitching 4.1 innings, yielding 4 runs (2 earned) on 7 hits, with 1 strikeout and 1 walk.

With the split, the Bears improved to 8-6 on the season, while Hinds moved to 5-3. Hinds still leads the all-time series with 10 wins compared to Baton Rouge's 6 losses.
The Bears will return home to Hartley Vey Oak Villa Sports Complex on Tuesday, February 18, to take on the Coastal Alabama North Coyotes in a doubleheader starting at 1 PM.
