
MEMPHIS, TN – Terryauna Griffin scored almost half of No. 24 Walters State's points on Saturday afternoon, as the Lady Senators grabbed a 66-49 win over Southwest Tennessee.
With the victory, Walters State improved to 14-4 overall and 11-0 in TCCAA play. The Lady Senators have now won six straight.
Griffin led the way for Walters State, finishing with 30 points and eight rebounds. Other contributors for Walters State were Anaya Mulholland-Natt with nine points, four assists, four steals, three rebounds and two blocks, Jahliya McDonald with seven points and nine rebounds, Alexis Hood with six points and six rebounds, Kyra Perkins with six points, four rebounds and three steals, Nyjah Gibbs with four points and eight rebounds and Raegan Starks with four points and four rebounds.
"Happy to come away with a win in a tough place to play," Walters State coach Jasmin Coleman said. "(Terryauna Griffin) stepped up as she has all season and made some big shots down the stretch. Once we were able to get the ball inside, good things started to happen. We have another tough one on Wednesday that we must prepare for."
The Lady Senators started well in the game, as Griffin had seven quick points to help lead Walters State to a 12-4 advantage. However, Southwest closed strong and took a 17-16 lead after the opening quarter.
In the second, Southwest got the lead to 20-16, but Walters State responded with an 8-0 run as Griffin scored, Hood scored and made two free throws and Perkins knocked in two free throws that made it 24-20. Walters State would hold that lead for the remainder of the quarter and took a 29-26 advantage into the break.
In the third, Southwest tied the game at 29 before Griffin took over with three 3-pointers over a five minute stretch that gave Walters State a 40-33 lead. The Lady Senators lead would stay around seven for the remainder of the quarter and one more Griffin made basket gave the Lady Senators a 44-37 lead.
The fourth quarter saw Southwest make one final push and make it a 48-47 game. However, the Lady Senators got some major points from Griffin late to pull away and take the win.
