Cowley volleyball clinches back-to-back conference championships with win over Fort Scott

The No. 1-ranked Cowley College volleyball team defeated Fort Scott 25-19, 25-11, 25-9 Wednesday night on the road in Fort Scott, Kansas. Cowley (32-0) clinched the program's 16th conference title, in program history, with the victory. This is the third conference championship in the past four seasons for the program.

Having come off of the tough Triton Invitational tournament and ten matches in thirteen days, the Lady Tigers started off slow against Fort Scott. The first set was back and forth with a tie at 19-19. The Lady Tigers then went on a 6-0 to earn the first set win 25-19.

Set two, started much like set one with both teams going back and forth, then Cowley cut down on its unforced errors, increased its serving aggressiveness and used their defense to create runs throughout the set. The Lady Tigers started with a ten point run that increased Cowley's lead to 14-4, then the team cruised from there to a 25-11 win.

Set three, both teams were tied at 4-4 before Cowley used it's strong serve, balanced attack, and defense to pull away with several runs for the 25-9 set win.

In the match, Cowley recorded a .309 hitting percentage with 43 kills, 42 assists, 7 aces, 49 digs and 2 blocks. Individually for Cowley, Laura Bonomi led the way with 12 kills while hitting a team leading .435 hitting % with 3 aces. Josci Buckley followed with 13 kills while hitting .333. Valarie Luna added 5 kills on 8 swings. Lu Ceroni also added 4 kills on 8 swings with 1 ace and 1 block. Hanna Darvas recorded her 12th double-double on the season as she dished out 35 assists and 10 digs with 1 ace. Jessi Ritchhart led the team with 20 digs and recorded 1 ace.

Up next for the Cowley Volleyball team is a road trip to Friends University for a match at 7:30 pm. Then the Lady Tigers return home for sophomore night on Saturday, November 2 at 6:30 pm. With the District Tournament set to begin Wednesday, November 6, the Lady Tigers have a chance to go undefeated in conference play and be undefeated at home with a win against last place Hesston College (7-15).
