Gaston College's 10-game road winning streak comes to an end on Saturday
Poor shooting, sloppy turnovers and a failure to get critical defensive stops combined to end Gaston College's 10-game road winning streak on Saturday afternoon in Saturday's 83-63 loss at Cape Fear Community College in a Region 10 Division I contest.
"They were the tougher team in every aspect of the game," Gaston College coach Benny Moss, whose team fell to 18-4 overall and 4-3 in Region 10 action. "They executed better on offense, they defended better on defense, they competed better, they rebounded better and they were the better team today."
Gaston College never led in a game in which it shot 31.8 percent overall, 17.4 percent on 3-pointers and committed 18 turnovers.
"That's a recipe for disaster," Moss said. "When you have 18 turnovers and shoot 17 percent from three and 32 percent overall, that's not good. You're defense better be exceptional if you going to shoot that poorly and commit that many turnovers. And we didn't.
"But give them credit. They were the better team offensively and defensively today."
The host Sea Devils (12-9, 4-4), who hit 16 3-pointers in a 95-80 win over Gaston College on Jan. 18, knocked down 10 more 3-pointers on Saturday and roared ahead 12-2 in the game's first four minutes.
The Rhinos closed within five at 17-12 later in the first half and were within seven at 62-55 with 9:49 to play before Cape Fear Community College closed out the victory.
Sophomore Judah Ravenell led Gaston College with 21 points and 14 rebounds with E.J. Joyner (16 points, 4 rebounds), Ryan Evans (10 points) and Kyhree McAlister (3 points, 6 rebounds) also making contributions.
Gaston College has one more game on its current three-game road trip on Wednesday at 6 p.m. when it visits Wake Tech before returning home for three games at Gastonia's Ashbrook High School - Feb. 15 against Brunswick Community College at 3 p.m., Feb. 19 against Wake Tech at 8 p.m. and Feb. 22 against Richard Bland at 3 p.m.
"We've got to go back and regroup," said Moss, whose team is 10-2 on the road this season. "Every road game is a tough one. We've been able to get a few but we didn't get this one. We've got to get back at it and try to get another road win on Wednesday."
