Broncos conclude 2024 season with 3-0 loss against Odessa College at NJCAA DI Volleyball Championships

Set 1

Sarah Schubert opened the match with a kill as the Broncos took the first point of the set. NMMI would take a slight 7-4 lead as Daicy Benites Franco tallied two of her five kills of the afternoon and Michelle Mlikan gave the Broncos the three-point lead with her first kill of the match.

Odessa would flip the script as they answered with a run of their own to take a 16-12 advantage with the help of a pair of attacking errors by the Broncos offense. The second half of the set was tight as NMMI fought back and stayed in the match as they forced an Odessa timeout as they trailed 21-19. However, the Wranglers would end up taking the first set 25-21.

Set 2

After the Broncos took a 4-3 lead with the help of a Selin Guler kill and a pair of kills by Schubert, Odessa responded with as they took a 10-6 lead and never looked back.

Every time the Broncos tried to cut the deficit, Odessa would answer with a pair of points to maintain a slight lead. Just like the first set, the Wranglers secured the middle set 25-21 to go up 2-0.

Set 3

In the final set of the 2024 season the Broncos held a 20-16 lead. As NMMI tried to extend the match they took a 23-21 lead after Yuliana Favela and Selin Guler tallied a block to deny the Wranglers point.

However, Odessa was able to end the match on a 5-1 run as they secured the sweep with a score line of 26-24 in the final set.

After going 1-2 in the NJCAA DI Volleyball Championships Head Coach Shelby Forchtner takes responsibility, "That's on me to figure out why we didn't perform on the big stage but this doesn't define who NMMI is or who the Broncos are… this moment doesn't feel good but it doesn't define our year at all," Forchtner said. "This moment here at the tournament just doesn't define our unit, we played very well together all year to get us to this point and we deserved to be here. But when we got here we just didn't play with that confidence that got us into this position," Forchtner said.
