Bullpen struggles; Garden City loses game two
Garden City, KS-More pitching woes in this one.
The Broncbuster bullpen surrendered 13 runs, Gerardo Prado and Payton Bush combined for nine RBI, and Amarillo beat Garden City, 18-7 in game two Friday afternoon at Williams Stadium.
Ayden Burton, who gave up the lead when he allowed four runs in the sixth inning, took the loss, dropping him to 1-1 on the season.
After a sluggish series' opener, the Broncbusters, who fell behind 4-1, used a four-run fourth, fueled by three RBI singles by Cody Kilpatrick, Joshua Miller, and Mason Tafoya, to take a 5-4 advantage.
But the pen squandered that in the sixth. After Christian McGuire's run-scoring single tied it, Ellington Jefferson smoked a 2-1 breaking ball to the gap for an extra base hit and an RBI that gave Amarillo the lead. Payton Bush added an RBI single later in the inning, and the visitors had a three-run cushion.
That was all a prelude to the seventh when the wheels completely fell off. Amarillo sent 15 men to the plate and scored 10 runs.
Tafoya collected his third straight multi-hit game for Garden City. He's now 8-for-his-last 10 at the plate.
Bret Deegan picked up the win for Amarillo, allowing one earned run on three hits in 3.1 innings.
