The Glen Oaks Community College women's basketball team traveled to Escanaba over the weekend and finished 1-1 at the Terrace Bay Hotel Classic hosted by Bay College.
Bay College 67, Glen Oaks 39
(Friday, Dec. 13)
The host team jumped out to a 16-8 lead in the first quarters and kept its foot on the gas the rest of the way, which included 29 total points from the Bay College bench. Both teams knocked down 10 3-pointers in the contest, but the Norse (6-5) were simply too much in the paint as well as in transition as they outscored the Vikings 28-18 down low and 26-11 on turnovers.
Glen Oaks sophomore Kaytlin Smith posted 15 points and 12 rebounds to lead the team in both categories. Kennedy Lockett was next in line offensively with eight points and Kylie Quist finished with six.
Anna Axtell had 16 points for Bay College to lead a cast of four double-digit scorers.
Glen Oaks 47, North Central Michigan College 42
(Saturday, Dec. 14)
A big second quarter gave Glen Oaks some breathing room and it would hold on for a victory. After being tied 16-16 through the first 10 minutes of play, the Vikings outscored NCMC 15-5 in the second quarter. Kennedy Lockett scored 12 of her team-high 19 points in the second frame
North Central battled back in the third quarter and held GOCC to just four points to make it a 35-32 game in favor of the Vikings heading into the fourth.
A big layup by Jordyn Partee and a free throw by Chelsi Zyla extended the lead to six but NCMC chipped away at the foul line and finally made a field goal to with 6:07 to play to make it a two-point game. A layup by North Central with under five minutes left tied the game at 38-38.
Quist answered with a 3-pointer for Glen Oaks and Partee sliced her way to the bucket to keep Glen Oaks in control. A pair of free throws by NCMC with 45 seconds left cut the lead to one point but Smith scored in traffic on the other end off an assist from Amanda Barber with 21 seconds on the clock. Quist would ice the game with a pair of free throws with six seconds remaining. She finished with eight points and three assists for the Vikings.
Zyla scored seven points and Tracy Ackley led the team with nine rebounds as the Vikings improved to 4-8 overall this season.
