The Marian University Ancilla Men's Basketball team took another step in postseason play Thursday afternoon, as they defeated Bay College, 83-69, to advance to the Championship Game of the Great Lakes District A Bracket. The victory puts them just one win away from being invited to the NJCAA Division II National Tournament.
Thursday's game was very tight throughout. Bay College led by as many as 5 points in the first half, but as both teams were trying to find their footing and struggling offensively, the Chargers were able to cut that deficit to 30-29 as they headed into the locker room at the half. For about the first 10 minutes of the second half, the Chargers took a small lead and tried to stretch it out, but Bay continued to make shots and cut it to a possession or two. Then, over the final quarter of the contest, Marian Ancilla really found their offense, and they were able to slowly build a much more comfortable lead before the final horn sounded.
Freshman guards Matt King and Jordan Woods were dynamic down the stretch. Each of them finished with 22 points, and Woods managed 20 of his in the second half. King added 5 rebounds, 3 assists, and a pair of thefts, while Woods posted a double-double thanks to his 13 rebounds, plus he added 6 assists and 5 steals to his tally. Fellow starters Davione Doty (16 points) and Jayden Sanders (10 points) also scored in double figures. Snipers Kenneth Grant and Ashton Oviedo combined to make 3 big 3-pointers at various times as well, helping to start MUAC runs or end Bay runs.
The Chargers now turn their attention to Oakland Community College. The two teams met twice around Christmas, with the Owls winning at their place on December 17th, 101-84, and the Chargers winning in Plymouth on January 4th, 91-72. This deciding game Saturday should be an offensive explosion. The two teams are set to face off at 1:30 p.m. at Mott Community College in Flint, Michigan. Please come out and support the Chargers, if you are able!!
