Delta College Shines in Coaches vs. Cancer Game with Commanding Win Over Montcalm
On a night dedicated to more than just basketball, the Delta College Pioneers delivered an inspired performance, securing a dominant 113-47 victory over Montcalm Community College in their Coaches vs. Cancer game at Pioneer Gym on January 29, 2025.
With the staff and players wearing purple in support of cancer awareness, the Pioneers put on an offensive showcase, scoring a season-high 113 points while displaying relentless energy on both ends of the floor. Delta set the tone early with a 24-17 first quarter before taking complete control in the second, outscoring Montcalm 33-8 to build a commanding 57-25 halftime lead.
Sophomore Carah McCrum led the charge with an all-around standout performance, scoring a game-high 26 points while adding six rebounds and three blocks. Freshman Annaka Neetz recorded a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds, while Ja'Leeah Griggs provided an efficient 13 points, showcasing her ability to finish around the rim.
The Pioneers' depth was also on display, as Passion Whiting (10 points), Kayla Howell (10 points, two assists), and Haven Vasold (11 points, three three-pointers) all contributed to the team's offensive explosion. Delta shot an impressive 48.9% from the field and 46.2% from beyond the arc, making 12 three-pointers in the contest.
Defensively, Delta stifled Montcalm's offense, forcing 25 turnovers and limiting the Centurions to just 24.2% shooting from the field. The Pioneers also dominated the boards, out rebounding Montcalm 51-36 and capitalizing on second-chance opportunities.
Montcalm's Makenna Rautio led her team with 12 points, while Madi Longoria added 11, but their efforts weren't enough to overcome Delta's relentless attack.
Beyond the game itself, the evening carried special significance as the Pioneers and their supporters united to raise awareness and funds for the Coaches vs. Cancer initiative. The event included halftime activities, including a half-court shot contest, and a moment of reflection for those affected by cancer.
"Tonight we had a complete team game, everyone was able to check in," said head coachJason Brown. "We shared the ball very well, we limited our personal turnovers, we've been talking about playing faster and we did that tonight. We didn't play to the level of the opponent, we made them play at our pace."
Final Score:
Montcalm Community College – 47
Delta College – 113
The Pioneers will look to carry this momentum into their next matchup as they continue their conference push on Saturday, February 1.
