RedTail Softball Suffers Two Losses

The RedTail Softball Team ended their three day weekend with two games at North Central Missouri College. The RedTails dropped game one, losing 9-8, and dropped game two, losing 15-7 in five innings.


Game One: 9 (NCMC), 8 (HCC)

The Pirates took an early lead in the bottom of the first, scoring three runs.

The RedTails started the bats in the second inning, scoring one run. Delaney Eickert started the inning with a single, but was forced out on a ground out. Courtney Hemsley then singled herself, advancing Emilee Bergmann to second. Rylie Devlin then had a hit to score Bergmann.

The top of the third saw four RedTail runs. Lucy Lebo started the inning with a single, quickly stole second, and scored on a Dharma Woodruff single. Eickert then had her second hit of the day, moving Woodruff to third. Bergmann then bunted for a base hit to load the bases. Hemsley then walked to score Woodruff. Dailyn Marine forced a Pirate error, scoring Eickert. Devlin then forced another Pirate error, scoring Bergmann to give the RedTails a 5-3 advantage.

NCMC responded with one more run, making the score 5-4.

With two outs in the top of the fourth, Eickert stepped up to get her third hit of the day. Bergmann then singled, moving Eickert to second. Hemsley kept the hot bat going and singled to score Eickert. Marine then walked to load the bases. Devlin then forced another Pirate error, scoring Bergmann, putting the RedTails up 7-4.

The bottom of the fourth saw one more Pirate run. The Pirates then tied the game in the bottom of the fifth inning, making it a 7-7 ball game.

In the top of the sixth, Hemsley hit a homerun to put Hawkeye up by 1.

NCMC responded in the bottom of the sixth, scoring two runs, putting them up 9-8. Unfortunately, the RedTails were unable to respond, making it a close loss.

At the plate, Hemsley was 3-3 with one run scored and three runs batted in. Eickert was 3-4 with two runs scored. Bergmann added two hits of her own. On the mound Mya Chamberlin took the loss, throwing six innings, giving up eight earned runs, three walks, and six strikeouts.

 

Game Two: 15 (NCMC), 7 (HCC)

The Pirates came out to a hot start, going up 6 runs in the first inning.

Hawkeye responded in the top of the second, scoring from a Hailey Harbour single and Hemsley homerun.

In the top of the third, the RedTails saw four more runs cross the plate. Bergmann hit a single to start the inning, and Jordan Eads sacrificed bunted her to second. Lebo then hit a single to score Bergmann. Hamand then walked to move Lebo to second. Woodruff was hit by a pitch to load the bases for Eickert, who hit a sacrifice fly to score Lebo. Harbour then hit a hard ground ball, forcing a Pirate error to score Hamand. Hemsley then hit a single to score Woodruff and Harbour, giving the RedTails a 7-6 lead.

The Pirates quickly responded, hitting a two run homerun to go up 8-7.

A tough fourth and fifth inning saw a quick fall, giving up three runs in the fourth and four runs in the fifth to complete the game.

At the plate, Hemsley led the Redtails again going 2-2 with two one run scored, four runs batted in, and a homerun. Lebo added two hits, and Bergmann and Harbour each had one. On the mound, Eads took the loss, going 3.2 innings, giving up three earned runs on five hits, three walks, and one strikeout.

 

The RedTails move to 3-7 on the season. They are back in action on Wednesday, March 5th at Iowa Western Community College.
