Not much went right for the Panthers on a cold, windy, and snowy Saturday as the baseball team dropped a doubleheader to Onondaga Community College. Each game only went five innings, but for very different reasons: game one was stopped due to the run-rule with the Lazers winning 22-1; game two was stopped due to the blustery conditions with Onondaga winning 1-0. The results leave the Panthers at 4-8 overall, 0-2 in the Region 3 West Division, and 2-6 in the Mid-State Athletic Conference. Onondaga improves to 6-4 overall, 2-0 in the West Division, and 4-2 in the MSAC.
Game One: Onondaga 22, Tompkins Cortland 1 (five innings)
The opener got out of hand quickly. Aided, by four errors, Onondaga put up seven runs on just two hits in the first inning. The Lazers added 10 more in the second and five more over the next two innings to coast to the win.
The Panthers were held hitless until the fourth when Dominic Zona (Rochester/Greece Arcadia H.S.) led off with an infield single, moved to second on a single by Keelan Marren (Skaneateles/Skaneateles H.S.) and eventually came around to score on when Cody Sayre (Spencer/Spencer-Van Etten H.S.) worked a bases-loaded walk.
Game Two: Onondaga 1, Tompkins Cortland 0
The second started with some excitement. Onondaga's leadoff hitter reached, stole second and moved to third on a throwing error. After the next batter struck out, the third hitter lifted a fly ball to straight-away center field. Zona made the catch and came up firing, unleashing a perfect strike to home to nab the runner trying to score. The offense continued to struggled, going down in order in the first two innings, but the defense kept things close. Catcher Hunter Bola (St. Cloud, Fla./Tohopekaliga H.S.) threw out a runner trying to steal in the second, and pitcher Cole Goggan (Freeville/Dryden H.S.) helped himself by picking off a runner to start the third.
Onondaga was able to put together a pair of hits later in the third to score the lone run, but Goggan limited the damage and kept the Panthers in the game until the end. The lefty finished the game having allowed seven hits, but allowing just the one run.
Looking ahead
The two teams are scheduled to play another doubleheader Sunday in Syracuse.
