
HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The Anne Arundel Community College women's soccer team fell to second seed Johnson County, 2-0, Tuesday in pool play at the NJCAA Division II Women's Soccer Championships. AACC, which advanced to the national tournament for the second time in three years, finishes the season with a 14-3-1 record -- the most wins in a season since 2011.
The Riverhawks recorded double-digit wins this season for the first time since 2014, and made their first appearance in the DII national tournament this season; AACC has now appeared in the NJCAA tournament at all three divisions.
The Lady Cavaliers (19-0-3) got on the board in the 40th minute when Lily Marshall one timed a cross from Tatum Bresette past a diving Pela Saunders. Saunders finished the first half with four saves and made six in the game.
Johnson County doubled its lead in the 53rd minute when Karsen Koehler sent a cross through the box to find Maya Wallace crashing in. Saunders made the initial save, but the ball got loose and dribbled into the net.
AACC had a great opportunity in the 52nd minute. A throw in at the 18-yard marker by Jaylin Sheffield pinged its way around the box and out to the foot of McKenzie Gilbert, whose rocket of a shot was blocked by a Johnson County player.
The Riverhawks had another great chance in the 72nd minute. AACC earned its first corner of the game and Emma Miga served it up to a crowd in front of the net. Several Riverhawks got a touch on the ball, but Johnson County cleared it out.
Johnson County keeper, Katie Stoskopf, earned her 10th shutout of the season, as the Lady Cavaliers advance to the semifinals on Thursday, November 21.
