MORRISTOWN, TN – No. 10 Walters State completed their first sweep of TCCAA play on Monday, grabbing 11-6 and 8-0 wins over Motlow State.
With the wins, the Senators improved to 14-2-1 overall and 4-2 in TCCAA play.
GAME ONE: No. 10 Walters State 11, Motlow State 6
In game one of the day, Kole Fenton broke open a 1-1 tie in the third with a grand slam and the Senators went on for the win from there.
Fenton had five RBIs in the game, while Brantley Bamberg homered and drove in two runs. Holden Pantier drove in three runs, as well, while Jack Vogele went a perfect 3-3.
On the mound, Gage Peterson (2-1) got the start and threw four innings. Peterson allowed one run on five hits and struck out four. After Reilly Byers gave up five runs on two hits in 0.2 innings, Brayden Blankenship pitched the next 1.1 innings. Blankenship allowed one hit and struck out one before Riley Franklin struck out one in a clean seventh inning.
Motlow got out to a 1-0 lead in the first and had runners on second and third with one out, but Peterson got a strikeout and fly out to get out of the jam.
Peterson found trouble again in the second, as Motlow loaded the bases with one out. But once again, Peterson got out of it with a strikeout and fly out. Using that momentum, the Senators tied the game in the bottom half of the inning as Bamberg doubled, moved to third on a single by Walker Morgan and scored on a Fenton groundout.
In the third, the Senators loaded the bases with two outs and took the lead on a walk by Kenny Cox that drove in Vogele. That brought up Fenton, and he took a ball over the fence for a grand slam that gave Walters State a 6-1 advantage.
The Senators scored four more in the fourth, as Pantier doubled home two runs and Bamberg smashed a two-run homer that made it 10-1. Motlow scored five in the fifth to cut it to 10-6, but Pantier singled home a run in the bottom half of the inning to get the lead back to five.
From there, the Senators pitching staff closed things out to take the 11-6 win.
GAME TWO: No. 10 Walters State 8, Motlow State 0
In game two, Tyler Myatt smacked two home runs and the Walters State pitching staff allowed just one hit.
Myatt drove in three runs with his two home runs, while Vogele hit a homer and drove in two runs. Along with those two, Fenton was 2-2 and drove in his sixth run of the day.
On the mound, Tyler Welch (3-0) got the start and threw two innings. Welch struck out three. Jace Kirby replaced Welch in the third and threw the next three innings, striking out two, before Matthew Porchas struck out two in the sixth inning. Rowan Park pitched the seventh and gave up a hit while striking out one.
For the first time in the series, Walters State got out to the early lead in the game as Vogele doubled home Nate Conner in the bottom of the first to make it 1-0. The Senators added four more in the third, as Vogele hit a solo home run and Myatt followed up two batters later with a two-run shot. The final run of the inning came on an RBI single by Fenton that made it 5-0.
In the fifth, Myatt crushed his second home run of the day over the fence in right to make it 6-0. An error scored another run in the fifth and a passed ball scored Walters State's eighth run in the bottom of the sixth.
