
The Central Community College volleyball team defeated Carl Sandburg College at the NJCAA Division II National Tournament on Thursday.
The win was head coach Mary Young's 800th of her career, with all 800 at CCC. Ironically, Young won her 700th win at the 2017 NJCAA national tournament in Charleson, W.V.
Carl Sandburg won the first set, 25-17, followed by CCC's bounce-back win in the second set, 25-16. The Chargers reclamined the advantage in the third set with a 25-16 victory, leading 19-9 at one point. Not to be outdone, the Raiders responded in the fourth set, taking a 25-17 win to force a decisive fifth set. The final stanza was close early on before the Raiders took a 10-6 advantage and went to a 15-9 final to win their first match of the tournament.
Lauryn Scott was dominant on the net with 22 kills. Maleigha Johnson led CCC in digs with 18 while Libbie Ball accounted for 51 assists.
This win comes off of a 3-0 loss to Enterprise State (Ala.) College in Wednesday's opening round.
CCC volleyball goes right back to work against Kansas City Kansas Community College at 4 p.m. on Thursday.
